College of Science and Technology

Every student at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana is affected in some way by the College of Science and Technology. Its courses are found in every major area of study, and it provides part of the foundation for almost every curriculum at NSU. The College offers a large number of degree-producing programs in its many departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Physics, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health and Human Performance, Industrial and Engineering Technology, and Mathematics. Students can pursue a number of four-year and two-year degrees. There are several pre-professional programs to prepare students for entry into professional universities and an outstanding Aviation program. The College houses the University's ROTC (military science) program.

In addition to its academic departments, the College oversees a number of independent programs that provide vital services on both a university and state level:

The NSU Child and Family Network is a multifaceted program providing services for parents and their children, child care center caregivers and directors, family child care home providers, and employers in a 30 parish area throughout Central and North Louisiana. It is a part of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The Space Science Group is actively involved in the development and implementation of educational programs for middle school and high school students that utilize aspects of NASA's space program to motivate them in their studies. SSG programs include The Black Hole Science Lab, Science: Out of This World, Practice Run, and What's Up in Space?.

The Inter-Disciplinary Experimentation And Scholarship (IDEAS) program fosters research and student development through the following objectives: promoting research collaborations between scientific disciplines that will create novel learning and training environments customized to advance our knowledge of complex scientific questions; and encouraging students to develop beyond the limits of any single discipline by achieving a balanced scientific cross training from several scientific disciplines simultaneously.

The Jove program is a highly selective scholarship program for students in the College of Science and Technology majoring in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics. Jove began as a Joint Venture with NASA and has since g rown into a vital part of the educational experience for outstanding mathematics and science students at NSU.
